> Understand dated African fare observations, why mixed-trip price trends were withdrawn, and how to compare current offers on route guides.

African fare observations can help you decide which routes to search, but they do not establish a cheapest booking day or a reliable future price. Our current comparable one-way history is too short to support a trend. Use the [route guides](/flights/) to inspect dated observations, then run a fresh search for your actual trip.

## What the current observations cover

At the 25 October 2026 refresh, our African route catalogue contained 196 route pairs. The cache returned a fare for 163 and no observation for 33. None had two comparable one-way snapshots in the current history. These are coverage figures for our own catalogue, not a count of all African routes or flights available for sale.

| Coverage at the dated refresh | Route pairs |
|---|---:|
| Catalogue checked | 196 |
| Cached fare available | 163 |
| No cached observation | 33 |
| At least two comparable one-way snapshots | 0 |

The table describes that refresh only. The route pages display their own observation dates; later updates may change coverage. No observation means the cache did not supply a price for that request. It does not mean the route has no flights, all seats are sold, or a different search will return no result.

## Why the earlier six-snapshot comparison was withdrawn

The earlier version compared historical lowest-price records whose trip type was not consistently identified. A one-way price and a return price are different products. Comparing them as though they were equivalent can create a false rise or fall, even when currency and airport pair are unchanged.

We have therefore removed the old percentage changes, “biggest movers” and cheapest-week conclusions. Those legacy observations are excluded from the comparable one-way history. Repeated refreshes in the same weekly bucket do not count as independent weekly observations. One valid point can show an observation; it cannot establish a direction of change.

## Where the prices come from

[Travelpayouts describes the Aviasales Data API](https://support.travelpayouts.com/hc/en-us/articles/203956163-Aviasales-Data-API) as cached prices derived from searches. Its prices-for-dates endpoint returns offers found by users within the previous 48 hours. This is a source of past observations, not a live inventory feed or a guarantee that an offer is still bookable.

Our display adds its retrieval date and currency so you can interpret the observation. USD is the display currency for this site; your seller or payment provider may quote or settle in another currency. Check the final amount and payment terms before purchase.

## What a fair price comparison needs

Keep the origin and destination airports, trip type, cabin, passenger count and currency consistent. Compare similar departure dates, baggage needs and connection limits. If one quote is nonstop and another uses separate tickets, record that difference before interpreting the price gap as a saving.

Even a series of comparable route-level observations is not a controlled experiment about when to book. The cheapest offer can refer to a different departure date or flight at each retrieval. A longer record may describe what appeared in the cache; it does not, by itself, predict the price of your chosen flight.

## Use the observations to plan a search

1. Open one of the [route guides](/flights/) and check the observation date and trip type.
2. Search your own dates, passengers and required airports.
3. Compare the final fare with the baggage and change conditions attached to it.
4. Add bags, seats, transfers and any required overnight stay in the [trip-budget tool](/tools/trip-budget/).
5. Save a useful itinerary in [My trip](/trip-planner/) and recheck availability before paying.

For trips with fixed family, work or pilgrimage dates, start from the arrival deadline and the acceptable connection. A cheap cached observation for a different date is not a reason to ignore those constraints. The [hub comparison](/doha-dubai-addis-kigali-hub-comparison-african-travelers-2026/) helps identify costs that a headline fare can leave out.

## Can these figures tell me to wait for a cheaper fare?

No. The current history does not support a price forecast or a universal cheapest weekday. Decide using the offers available for your trip, the consequences of waiting and the conditions you need. This page explains the evidence behind the observations rather than presenting an unsupported buying rule.
