> Plan a Nairobi NBO to Wilson WIL connection: road transfer, Kenya entry checks, airline check-in deadlines, smaller-aircraft baggage and a fallback plan.

An NBO to WIL connection changes airports. After an international arrival at Jomo Kenyatta, plan for entry into Kenya, baggage collection and a road transfer to Wilson before the next airline's check-in deadline. Confirm your documents, baggage plan and missed-flight arrangements before buying the two flights.

## Check both airport codes before paying

NBO identifies Jomo Kenyatta International Airport; WIL identifies Wilson Airport. AirKenya's [airport FAQ](https://airkenya.com/faq/) confirms that its flights leave Wilson, not JKIA. “Nairobi” on both search results therefore does not establish a connection within one terminal.

Copy the airport codes from each flight into your plan. Add the onward operator's building or meeting point at Wilson: reaching the airport entrance is not the same as reaching the correct check-in desk. Ask the seller whether the transfer is included and who handles a missed onward departure. One checkout screen alone does not prove that separately issued tickets carry connection protection.

The [NBO airport guide](/airports/nbo/) helps with the first airport. A route page such as [Johannesburg to Nairobi](/flights/jnb-to-nbo/) is a starting point for comparing the incoming journey, not evidence that a Wilson connection is protected.

## Work backwards from the check-in deadline

[Safarilink's FAQ](https://www.flysafarilink.com/travel-information/faqs) sets its latest Wilson check-in at 60 minutes before departure. AirKenya publishes a different cutoff: check-in closes 30 minutes before departure, with arrival advised 90–60 minutes beforehand. Apply the rule of your actual onward operator; these are not airport-wide deadlines.

| Step in the connection | What to put in your plan | What can consume the margin |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival at NBO | Flight arrival date and local time | Late arrival, disembarkation |
| Exit to the public arrivals hall | Documents and bags ready | Immigration, bag delivery, customs |
| Transfer to Wilson | Driver, meeting point, correct airline building | Traffic, locating the driver |
| Check-in at WIL | Operator's deadline and bag acceptance | Repacking, paying for accepted excess |
| Boarding | Gate or lounge instructions | Walking to the wrong operator |

The scheduled landing time is the beginning of that chain. Do not use a map's road estimate as the total transfer time. Safarilink describes the airports as approximately 18 km apart and warns that rush-hour road travel needs more time. Its transfer service requires at least 48 hours' notice; obtain the current quote and meeting instructions before relying on it.

Ask the onward airline to assess your proposed flight pair. If there is little room after its check-in deadline is subtracted, compare a later flight or a night in Nairobi. There is no universal safe layover for this transfer.

## Prepare documents for entering Kenya

The [official eTA information](https://etakenya.go.ke/general-information) exempts qualifying transit passengers who remain within airport precincts. A road journey between NBO and WIL leaves those precincts. Check entry requirements for the passport and residence documents you will actually use; other exemptions may apply, so “everyone needs an eTA” is also the wrong rule.

Where an application is required, the portal lists a passport, photo, contact details, arrival/departure itinerary, accommodation confirmation and a payment method among the application inputs. Follow the current application flow and official travel notices, including any additional requirements it presents. This guide does not determine individual eligibility.

Keep the approved document or evidence of an applicable exemption accessible with the onward booking. If your itinerary includes an overnight stop, make the accommodation address and local contact available offline. A driver reservation does not resolve the border-document question.

## Repack for the onward aircraft

A long-haul baggage allowance does not become the allowance on a separate Wilson ticket. [AirKenya's baggage policy](https://airkenya.com/baggage-policy/) specifies 15 kg including hand baggage in soft-sided bags; its carry-on component is part of that total. Confirm your booked service and any equipment needs with the operator before leaving home.

Separate what you need at the destination from luggage you can leave in Nairobi. AirKenya publishes complimentary storage for return-flight passengers, but confirm the collection hours, return location and suitability for your items. Storage is less useful if your itinerary ends at another airport or you cannot retrieve the suitcase before your next departure.

For excess bags, request accepted weight and carriage arrangements in writing. Paying a fee at the desk should not be your only plan: small-aircraft capacity can constrain excess acceptance. Keep valuables, travel documents and permitted essentials in the bag that stays with you, within the operator's restrictions.

## Keep a fallback plan with the bookings

Save the two booking references, the driver contact and the onward airline's change conditions in the [trip planner](/trip-planner/). Record who to contact while still at NBO if the incoming flight changes. Ask when a no-show is recorded and whether a later departure can be arranged; do not presume seats will exist that day.

Use the [trip-budget tool](/tools/trip-budget/) to compare the complete options: transfer, baggage arrangement, accommodation and a later onward flight where quoted. A lower combined airfare can cease to be the useful choice once the time needed to reach Wilson is included. Use current offers, with no assumed discount or fixed taxi price.

Before departure, recheck both airport codes, the Wilson operator's deadline, documents, baggage acceptance and the driver's pickup instructions. Those five confirmations make the connection concrete.

## FAQ

### Can I stay airside when transferring from NBO to Wilson?

No. NBO and Wilson are separate airports connected by road, so you must arrange entry into Kenya and a landside transfer.

### Does every passenger need a Kenya eTA for the transfer?

No. Check the official requirements and exemptions for your travel documents. The exemption for remaining within airport precincts does not cover the road transfer.

### Can I use my international baggage allowance at Wilson?

Do not assume that. Check the onward operator and ticket; AirKenya publishes a 15 kg total including hand baggage in soft-sided bags.
